Creating a meditative environment that accommodates for two different communities, that allows them to coexist without invading on the others privacy.

Perspective of Monk’s Dwelling

This project creates a meditative atmosphere within the urban context and answers to challenges posed by the unit brief.
This Zen dojo makes use of two circulation routes to incorporate a civic aspect alongside a dwelling for 4 Buddhist monks. The public library is housed within the building to give the dojo a civic presence in Stokes Croft. Whilst this benefits the community, it also is used regularly by the monks and other Zen practitioners for their studies.
The two routes through the building give the monks the option to remain separate from the Stokes Croft community but also allows for non-invasive interactions between the public and the residents.
