{"id":8676,"date":"2020-07-09T14:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-09T13:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mappedsites.cardiff.ac.uk\/wsaexhibition\/?p=8676"},"modified":"2020-07-15T11:16:55","modified_gmt":"2020-07-15T10:16:55","slug":"jack-cowdrey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/2020\/jack-cowdrey\/","title":{"rendered":"JACK COWDREY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>&#8220;THE CITY OF INNOVATION&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Reacting to Kochi\u2019s socially and environmentally unsustainable economic growth, the thesis aims to restructure its economy and environment by facilitating graduates, investors and entrepreneurs to come together by developing a new ecosystem of entrepreneurial activity that brings economic diversity to the city.&nbsp;The proposal is for an innovation hub which&nbsp;reacts to the current climate of unsustainable economic zones outside of the city by&nbsp;adaptively&nbsp;reusing&nbsp;and expanding&nbsp;a coastal, inner city spice trade warehouse and its grounds. Citizens looking to start their own manufacturing business venture are provided with continuous education, workshops for product development, informal gathering spaces, manufacturing facilities and amenities to grow their businesses.&nbsp;The proposal creates a landscape of public gardens, courtyards and routes of various scales into a civic piece of architecture that creates nodes of activity and encounters between different users, surrounded by water and gardens that&nbsp;re-connect Kochi with its local traditions and culture.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/1-9-1024x725.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/1-9-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"Conceptual diagram showing the proposal: supply, demand, incentive and goals are shown as a process\"\/><\/a><figcaption>\ufeff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"> The urban strategy aims to facilitate graduates, investors and entrepreneurs to come together and develop ideas by creating a decentralised network supported by production and innovation hubs across the city.&nbsp; The strategy re-uses existing building stock, utilises Kochi\u2019s abundance of canals and provides a framework for live\/work cottage&nbsp;industry&nbsp;style manufacturing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/2-12-1024x725.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/2-12-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"A section through the site is shown in context to the surroundings  \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"> Innovation workshops in the form of pavilions expand the grounds of the spice trade warehouse, fronting onto the waterfront. The pavilions are connected&nbsp;visually and physically&nbsp;by an upper level walkway that&nbsp;also&nbsp;provides open and airy meeting spaces between workshops.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/3-10-1024x725.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/3-10-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"A site visual showing the everyday workings of the proposal \"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"> Courtyards between pavilions provide natural water pools and shade, creating moments of encounter between different users, encouraging the sharing of knowledge and the creation of new ideas, whilst reconnecting the users back to nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/4-12-1024x725.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wsa-ondisplay.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/06\/4-12-1024x725.jpg\" alt=\"A site visual showing people enjoying the public spaces within the proposal\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\"> A central axis through the site is formed by inhabited walls either side using clay hollow blocks to enclose courtyards and provide niches to display products&nbsp;engaging the passer-by.
