My second project of 2nd year was to design a new building for the Bethel United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic on North Road, Cardiff.<\/p>\n
My project's focus was to demolish the existing building that was no longer viable for the growing church and creating a new community-focused complex. This was to include the Main Sanctuary Area, a Cafe, Foodbank, Counselling Rooms, Offices and other Ancillary Spaces . Bethel United Church of Jesus Christ Apostolic on North Road, Cardiff. The Church has outgrown the existing building, which currently has a capacity of about 100 worshippers, and is looking to double the capacity of their primary worship space.\r\nThe project involves designing a place of sanctuary, comprised of a worship space and ancillary facilities. The ancillary facilities will include spaces that enable the Church client to provide counselling services and run a food bank.\r\nThe site is located on many thresholds. To the immediate west of the site, Blackweir fields and arboretum extend directly into Bute Park, the most significant green space in Cardiff. North road runs directly past the site frontage, leading to extensive student housing to the north (including Talybont halls of residence) and a more traditional Victorian neighbourhood to the north-east that houses a demographically and ethnically diverse community. The city centre starts immediately south of the site, with Park Place and Cardiff University campus to the immediate east. \r\nThe Church have an open door policy and is already offering various types of support \u2013 both to their congregation and to the wider community. They are looking to consolidate this support with facilities that enable them to provide a food bank and counselling services (both one to one and working in groups). In addition, there is scope for the new church to provide a valuable sanctuary, a place of solitude and a place of solace in the busy city centre location.
