The present site is a transitory one; situated between the main Cardiff Uni accommodation area and the university itself - however it is currently fairly diminutive, unrecognised, and frequently walked past without notice. As such my most pivotal aims were to create a new space which stands out among its surroundings, turning this forgotten space into a new visual beacon and anchor point for the local community.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this I focused on the use of three distinct monoliths - a religious prayer space, a community gathering space, and a central atria which anchors both together. In these monoliths, I sought to be as dramatic as possible, creating a new structure which truly dominates the site and visually draws attention - in turn drawing people inside. The public would enter through a narrow 'book page' opening, before revealing an insulated, otherworldly carved cavern within this atria monolith. This would in turn lead on either to a more focused religious space centered on a 'picture-frame' view of Bute Park beyond, or a more open ancillary wing lined by large bi folds opening up to the community outside.<\/p>\n<p>Linking all this together, I used rammed earth as my key material. This was used for its monolithic nature, yet soft, beautiful and textured finish - creating structures which dominate but are not overbearing. The thick walls necessitated by rammed earth, emphasise the sense of insulation from the busyness of North Road and the otherworldlyness within, whilst 'rooting' the building tightly to the site as though it is as permanent and secure an institution as the church it houses.<\/p>\n","location":"Bethel United Church of Jesus Christ, North Road, Cathays, Cardiff, Wales, CF, United
