It provides sanctuary to the Society of Change Ringers at St Margaret\u2019s church in Westminster, who have occupied the space since the early 1890\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #666666\">A ringing bell holds the key to memories. Not just our own past, but everyone\u2019s. We associate bell\u2019s with providing us with a structure to our lives, they ring in time, peace, death and memory. The idea that they help us remember or re-remember an event, brings forward a thought: can the sound of a ringing bell be an unintentional monument? In order for asylum seekers to gain sanctuary, they had to simply enter a church and wait for an appointed officer of the crown to arrive. Once the coroner arrived, the seekers had to confess to their crime, whether they committed it or not, and they were then under the protection of the church. In some cases, more specific action was required, such as ringing a certain bell, sitting down on a special bench or wrapping their hand around a special door-knocker.\n\nDuring the existence of English sanctuary laws, which lasted until 1624, countless thousands of felons claimed sanctuary. In some counties as many as half of the recorded felonies would end in a sanctuary claim rather than a trial. A regional governor met her and tried without success to persuade her to marry him. Frustrated by her rejection he gave orders for her to be imprisoned and subjected to physical torture. When this failed to break her spirit or her faith, she was finally condemned to death. King Edward did not intend for it to be especially when standing in the shadow of the Abbey. However the church\u2019s safety drew the parishioners in for many centuries, it not only gave sanctuary to the people but was also a sanctuary for memories and their meanings. The different monuments, inscriptions and relics within the building are there to memorialise and celebrate a person or an event.
