The schools' market in Egypt continues to increase fuelled by population growth and the need to replace or renovate older schools. The Egyptian government, through the General Authority of Educational Buildings, has designed different prototypes for public schools to meet the needs for building new schools. These prototypes have been built with the same materials and structures all over the country regardless of the different climatic conditions, which resulted in drawbacks in their indoor environmental quality. Regenerative design is an emergent approach that overcomes the limits of green design to address the environmental crises through achieving net-positive impact. The applications of this approach to fit the Egyptian context are inexistent. This research argues that regenerative design for public schools in Egypt would contribute not only to mitigating environmental degradation, but also positively affecting socio-ecological systems, while connecting these buildings to a larger system, transforming them into a regenerative cell for the community.
