This design unit aims to regenerate the town walls, infrastructure, and link unused
public buildings in Castelfranco Veneto (Italy) to bring together the city's old and new public spaces. It also aims to create valued experiences for residents, surrounding communities, and tourists while reinforcing the identity of the local community.

Through design research, the town walls infrastructure has been turned from a wasted resource with a strong relationship to the local community identity, to a connecting backbone and living urban space. It does this by linking open spaces and public buildings with strategic connection points to generate life inducing experiences and sustainable living opportunities for citizens and visitors. A range of facilities have been designed for the city including a community space and civic centre, a library of things, a product hub, and a food bank that all promote sustainable living practices and provide opportunities for meeting and social cohesion.

This collective experiment has provided strategic scenarios for the regeneration of the town wall infrastructure to support the sustainable living of the residents, surrounding communities, and tourists while strengthening the identity of the local community.

The design unit has engaged students in design research and integrated design thinking to build skills for thinking critically, learning independently, and tackling complex challenges. Through design research, students have defined their own questions to answer within the
project by analysing the context and design precedents that inform their design process and developing design solutions to address the challenge.
