XVI Craft

TUTOR: DR STEVE COOMBS

As a unit we have addressed the meaning and identities associated with craft and manufacturing and the impact that these may have on making architecture.
There are often perceived disparities in making and manufacturing; bespoke and mass produced; hand and robotic skills; craft, material and place that impact on the quality of the end ‘product’ and in turn reflect on place, social standing and identity.
The notion of ‘craft’ today is perhaps one of the most frequently used concepts within architecture, the arts and humanities. In the words of Christopher Frayling, ’craftsmanship has again become fashionable’.
In response to the concept of craft, the last century has seen a renewal of the term ‘architect as maker’. In contrast however, vast numbers of architects have also become increasingly disjointed from the making process and in consequence, a design often relies on tried and tested products to meet approved performance requirements, reducing specifications to a ‘shopping list’ of systems and products.
