Exploring sustainable agricultural methods to support predicted future populations.

“The ‘rural’ is now defined from an urban perspective. With an expected 30% increase in the World population and the consequent intense pressure to increase food production by 70% by 2050, the ‘rural’ is facing dramatic pressure and decline. With the added effects of urbanization and predictions that 68% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, cities will have to devour larger areas of land to support the urban demand, therefore the rural will have to develop accordingly. With sustainability in mind, there needs to be a shift within agriculture, steering away from the impending drive towards industrial agriculture. Is it possible for the UK to adopt a sustainable agricultural method that can support these urban demands?”

Initial Research – exploring greenhouse cultivation as a sustainable food production method and how this could be implemented into the UK in order to become more self-sufficient. This lead to my hypothesis of incorporating elements of agriculture under environmental manipulation but on a smaller scale.
