Project Description

Unearthing the Mines

Programme:
With the existing building only being used on the ground floor as a restaurant, bar and multipurpose space, we aimed to retain these functions but also introduce a cafe and larger flexible use community space while restoring the first floor cinema/theatre.

Structure and Materiality:
The existing structure has been preserved and improved with reclaimed brick used externally on the new extension to be sympathetic and cohesive. Internally the extension is supported by locally sourced timber columns and CLT floor slabs, the ground floor of the existing building has been opened up by reintroducing concrete columns.

Sustainability:
Sustainability was prioritised from the start, focusing mostly on preserving the building as well as using recyclable materials and focusing on passive heating and ventilation methods wherever possible.

Community:
Covering two of the main aims, this project creates a central hub for the community to meet and socialise within. Different spaces have been provided to meet everyone's different needs across all age groups and provide spaces for wider community groups to gather.
