Project Description

Mixed family housing

The creation of a central courtyard encourages interaction as most houses open into the central space. The purpose of a COURTYARD is to provide a communal space for socializing, sitting or playing and can be designed to include any combination of seating, sculptures, tree pits, play areas or soft/hard landscaping. Thus, the scheme tries to provide public and private spaces to increase communal living maintaining a certain amount of privacy. Separate units with individual stairs and entrances (access points) have been created to maintain overall privacy, in a proximity to communal living

. The central space which is the communal space needs maximum amount of ventilation and natural light to facilitate public interaction and movement. If all the building units were of the same height, it would make the central space very congested receiving minimum amount of natural light. Thus, to prevent this a scheme can be introduced where the building heights keep decreasing in a radial manner to prevent the formation of an enclosed dark space. This project complies with the environmental, sustainability, and space standards requirements making it ideal as an organised communal living space. I tried to achieve an atmosphere which is welcoming to all and encourages communal living by creating a radial open space which imparts the sense of wholeness and shelter.
