Project Description
The Miners Welfare Center
'The proposal aims at the development of three revenue generators: the library, story-telling space and market hall. Previously, one of our main revenue generators, the market space which is also an important factor of boosting and promoting local businesses, was outdoors with no shelter. With Resolven’s wet climate, it would have been minimally used and thus not fully optimized. In this proposal, the market hall acts as a multi-purpose venue for hosting other events like balls, weddings, conferences, and other celebrations for the community.
This space also promotes two revenue opportunities. The design is simple and provides views into the main community space through courtyard adding layers of social interaction by using the previously unused garden. Moreover, it provides long views out to Resolven's landscape. Resolven is rich in its natural beauty with its landscape all around providing visual refuge to its residents. Landscapes which are familiar to those living in them will always find a way to comfort and guide as they are used to seeing them. In terms of sustainability, the market place roof profile helps generate solar electricity and combined with a small water element, it allows us to harvest rainwater while providing another natural element to the courtyard.
The story-telling space allows for full use of the main hall connected to an open bar and the restaurant (visually) The performance stage now incorporates the view of the courtyard to depict and embody the natural beauty of resolven. It was imperative to make this space a focal point of the whole proposal as it anchors the audience to a central point providing more focus to the stories being told.
Thus, the stage extends out a bit to embed the story-tellers into the courtyard spotlit with natural light. The lighting explorations were done to explore which roof profile would best suit this vision. The library is the central CWTCH space: two small extensions which frame complex views of the courtyard and long views of the landscape. The spaces are connected to the main community centre with a courtyard and interconnected with each other with another smaller courtyard. The spaces embody tranquility and comfort to promote more informal discussions one-on-one.
