Project Description

‘The Drift’ into a New Identity

The existing restaurant has not been reaching its full potential in attracting the local and wider community, with its place within the Welfare being easily missed or not recognised. The proposed terrace extension aims to combat this issue with its organic form and the appealing colour and textural contrasts between the brick, timber structure and copper elements. Emphasis has been placed on the neighbouring landscape by facilitating the option to sit within it and capture the views that have been dismissed by the existing. The proposal encourages not only the growth of the restaurant and its public outreach, but also the growth of ecological systems that provide a sense of place. Planting that surrounds the extension will provide a sensory connection to nature, whilst the rain chain external drainage has been positioned to drain water directly into the vegetation, exposing the sight and sounds of running water when sat within the outdoor
