Project Description
Public community project set in a discarded Lloyd's bank
My work is interested in remaking the idea of, and the current human experience with, ‘public space’. Much of public space as we know it today (in a Western capitalist context) is reliant upon our role as a 'visitor public'. We are either deemed visitors or owners of space; spectators or authors as Michel de Certeau put it. My proposal tries to create a place where people can become more than visitors who come and go; as is the way in terms of public space mannerisms today.
. The idea is of a place that is common- in line with what people in Caldicot know and are comfortable with, and common in terms of following a kind of formal material language that speaks to the 'vernacular of the heart' of existing residents and the history of the town. My design is of a place that could act as a kind of commons for the town itself. A place where resources can be shared, and where culture and human relationships can be expressed in a creative setting.
