Project Description

Caldicot Dancing centre

Taking a cue from the precedent set by the floating structure, I settled on the concept of a floating dance studio. The studio should have an open feel and interplays with light and shadow. My immediate thinking is to try not to demolish too many existing structures for environmental grounds. I left the staircase as it is, so I planned the areas around it. I wanted a path for people to take from the shower to the dance studio. However, the route between would be outside, which would be inconvenient.

Making the route indoors would necessitate greater building construction, which would be both environmentally and financially damaging. I wanted to create a public area where people might come together, or it could be used for outdoor dance or exercising. The square could be used to connect the other rooms. To address these issues, I attempted to reconstruct the existing Lloyds bank. Rather than having glazed windows stuck inside, I made an effort to expand the studio in order to ensure that people at the terminus of the main street can also have a view of the studio.

Additionally, the space below has the potential to function as a space or performing area. Because of the layout of the building, the square can be relocated to the lobby of the studio. Bringing the square closer to the high street is beneficial for daylighting, as well as for increasing the number of people who visit the area. To convey the whole atmosphere of the dance studio, I created the drawing of the studio’s exterior at night, while the Caldicot market is open. I also designed the back square of the dancing studio. There is potential here due to the site’s alley-way layout. To improve communication between the high street and other areas, by adding more visual interest to the otherwise dull alleyway can be as simple as making the dance floor above it translucent.

This could potentially be a interactive performance as well. The parking lot is huge, with a desolate area in the middle. From the main drag to the opposite side, I planned a black concrete route suitable for biking and walking. The kids’ theatre is the next stop along the way.
