According to Cambridge Dictionary, well-being is simply described as “the state of feeling healthy and happy”. The subject’s importance has been internationally, nationally, and regionally acknowledged this past few years, from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the UK National Well-being Program, to the Wales Well-being of Future Generations Act.
Even more so when the Coronavirus (Covid) pandemic hit in 2019 in which people are obliged to stay indoors - afterwards, it has become apparent that one’s environment can attribute to individual physical and physiological health. As Botton mentions, “One of the greatest (but often unmentioned) causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kind of walls, chairs, buildings and streets we are surrounded by”.
In the UK, one in four people suffers from a diagnosable mental health problem. Furthermore, in 2021, there were 5,583 suicides (the equivalent of 17 death per day) registered in England and Wales. Social connection is one of the major factors of individual life satisfaction - loneliness is considered a silent killer, since leading to mental health problems that increase one’s risk of death by 29%. It is one of the key issues in the area, with locals reporting the feeling of loneliness across all generations, especially post Covid-19.
Consequently, the importance of Carmarthen’s residents’ mental and physical well-being will be the main focus throughout this design thesis.
