Project Description

Unlocking the potential of Calicut as a social network

The thesis approaches the idea of liveability in cities through the lens of the notion of social capital. Obtained on the basis of network within a community social capital allows for enhanced political agency, financial efficiency and collective identity. Inherently our cities constitute networks and thus hold the potential of catalysing higher social capital.

. My thesis ask what role could the built environment carry in that endeavour. Theoretical and on-site research emphasizes the importance of notions such as walkability, mixed use city and compact city in that regard. The conducted analysis informed for the need to pedestrianize the city and limit the uncontrolled urban sprawl which Calicut has been experiencing in the last 30 years.

An alternative model for high-rise developments is proposed in the areas next to the elevated metro line- part of the overall group urban strategy. The proposed building integrates a ramp running from the ground level to the rooftop public spaces where series of commercial units and pavilions are places. Throughout this elevation one finds various size commercial units, green spaces and connections to train platforms and other such towers. In the mix of that veranda spaces of residential units are facing the ‘’ramp-street’’ creating semi-public spaces where interactions occur. Integrated within cantilevered slabs are garden space which neighbours could develop together. The entrances to the residential units are placed on little alleys branching off from the main ramp creating a hierarchy of public to private spaces. The imagined client of the proposal is a housing cooperative organisation which is reflected in its architecture. Flexible modular system for the residential units allow flats to be enlarged or shrunk depending on the needs of the changing with time users. Shaded corner spaces are left open inviting for negotiation between street vendors, shop owners and residents.
