Microbial Alchemy: Unveiling the Hidden Potential of Biomining for Precious Metal Recovery on Dormant Industrial Sites
A Resilient Workforce : The focal point of my thesis revolves around the extraction of raw materials and investigates how our industrial heritage can serve as a catalyst for the recovery of precious metals through the utilization of fragments found on sites such as Cefn Coed Colliery, a former coal mine. Amidst the ceaseless endeavor to excavate land in search of dwindling amounts of valuable metals, this study unequivocally demands a cessation of such practices and a concerted effort to explore novel avenues for reusing the resources we have already depleted.
The research delves into an intriguing revelation concerning the presence of microbes sourced from soil contaminated by residual metal waste. These microorganisms possess a unique capability to form bonds with pulverized fibers from discarded digital boards found in electronic products, thereby enabling the extraction of pure gold. By emphasizing the imperative of rectifying our environmentally detrimental actions rooted in wasteful and excessive extraction practices, this thesis aims to establish a harmonious balance between rectifying past mistakes and advancing the principles of a circular economy.
The new proposal features a raw electronic waste processing factory, a microbial laboratory, mini lab testing units, and a gold refinery. Above these underground facilities stand two towers. One tower accommodates teams of researchers driving further innovation, while the other houses designers working with the pure gold from the factory to create customized jewelry. An existing building plays a dual role as a gold vault and bank, utilizing industrial boilers for secure storage of gold bars. These interconnected elements create a resilient workplace in a remote region of Wales, merging programmatic and functional aspects seamlessly.
In the midst of Wales' landscape lie numerous dormant industrial sites, brimming with untapped potential. It is within this context that a compelling vision emerges, both simple and formal, offering inspiration for the revitalization of these neglected spaces. Let this example serve as a catalyst, reigniting collective imagination and inspiring a movement to transform the landscape to a sustainable gold mine.
