Project Description

A Community Visitor Centre in the shadows of the Black Mountains showcasing local produce and craft beer.

Abergavenny, despite being considered as the Food Capital of Wales with its yearly food festival, market hall and numerous cafes and bakeries, lacks a connection between the land and its people. Melin Cibi, a microbrewery centre, is a space for the locals and visitors to enjoy Abergavenny’s local produce all year round. The name Melin Cibi, meaning ‘Cibi’s Mill’,derives from the site’s history, where a Corn Mill sat until the early 20th century and the river Cibi ran through the site.

The building echoes vernacular Welsh architecture with the use of material and its form- compromising of the Tŷ Hir (Longhouse) where the production of beer takes place, the Cytiau where one enters and learns about the history of the site, Abergavenny’s food culture and the production happening on site, as well as purchasing produce in the second Cwt.

Lastly, the Sgubor, the third outer building where people would be able to take in the view of the castle meadows, the river Usk and Blorens mountain whilst sampling the craft beer and local produce. Melin Cibi offers a new perspective of the Fenni’s food industry and honours the sites industrial history.
