Project Description
PLACE FOR LIFE; MÉDIATHÈQUE
The key challenge with designing the médiathèque is that it is subterranean. An underground structure has challenges stemming from being restricted by the topography, light and climate constraints. The architectural design intent behind my project was to design a threshold building that took a user through multiple sensory experiences while also providing a multi- purpose building that enhances socialising and promotes community.
The design began by integrating open spaces within the underground structure as open courtyard spaces revolving around community spaces such as a cafe, learning hall, library and exhibition. The building had to relate to the context of the site, and in this case, it was Raglan castle, a medieval castle built in the early 15th century and Raglan town, which sits opposite the site and the castle.
