Project Description

Thresholds

'The theory of thresholds is a wide concept, which can be conceived in many ways. The atmosphere of a space is created the second you transition through or into a threshold.

Resolven due to Covid and lack of a communal building has lost vital connections within its strong community. Using the theory of thresholds, not just within the building but wider site context and elevations will allow for a more inviting building, while creating a much needed Home for Resolven.

In order to create a communal building that everyone can access, one aim of the project is to utilise the existing railway track and turn it into a cyclist and pedestrian path. This new path will give enhanced access for older members of the community which was previously restricted due to the existing step

The scheme explored the movement of people around the site and village concluding that the key to unlocking the building could be creating a new entrance point at the east to draw more local people, cyclists and walker from the north of the village.

Exploring the meaning, and principles of thresholds through precedents allowed me to analyse the current thresholds within the building, their weaknesses and how they could be improved.
When people are sceptical or uneasy about entering a new space, the design should portray warmth to settle their nerve, as well as intrigue to draw their curiosity into the building. These are the principles that the project explores, without being a new bold statement, how could the new thresholds draw people from multiple walks of life into the

Alongside developing the aesthetics of the thresholds as part of my sustainable aims I wanted to analyse whether my thresholds could allow the building to breathe, creating a comfortable, welcoming space while increasing the efficiency. This technical exploration allowed for physical elements of the thresholds to be developed, which lead onto the atmospheric exploration.

The main journey through the building that was explored was from the street at the east, through to the communal spaces and garden. This new movement transformed the way the building is used, while creating prominent new thresholds. These thresholds explore the transitions from exterior to interior, and movement between open plan spaces.

The sketch’s and renders were used to develop small moments within the thresholds exploring materiality, light, openings, and overall atmosphere. Transforming the dark, long rooms in the existing building, into a light, open and homely space for the community to thrive and grow.
