Project Description

Functionally

'Departure for Stage II
The new design removes most of the divisions between spaces on the ground floor in favour of a much larger, full span, open plan space. It is intended for use as a bar / restaurant, with the extra space allowing for a more generous area for auxiliary functions such as snooker, darts and perhaps a temporary stage for live events. The increased capacity will encourage wider use of the space and allow for a diversity of functions that supports the operation of the building.
The proposed extension is entirely removed, in favour of focusing performance activities upstairs. In it’s place, a community garden / covered courtyard spills out to the south-western side of the building. This space is shielded from the surrounding residences by thick planting and sound absorbing timber. The space opens out primarily to the street, but also is a key pairing with the interior area, allowing deep penetration of natural light and creating a comfortable outside breakout area for all events and activities.

Environmental
Additionally, there is space for photovoltaic power generation on this side of the building, as the area is raised above all surrounding obstacles and faces south-west. This may help to bring the operation of the building closer to net zero, in combination with interior insulation and servicing works. The space is intended to blend indoor and outdoor in a wet and cold climate, using minimal active intervention. The green housing effect of the

Material
The entrance section of the building, while largely outside the remit of this design stage, has been updated to show only a selective and strategic revelation of existing brickwork. This was done as part of a general move toward conservation of structure from weathering, not knowing the lifespan of the brick when facing the local climate. Some of the window panes are bricked in, using recycled bricks from the punctured south side as non-structural detailing.
Experiential / Atmospheric
The space is intended to feel rustic, with aged brick, timber beams and boards, simple seating and a cellar-like arrangement. This not only is effective for budget, but compliments the theme of the building’s original use and users. The space should feel cosy, yet open due to the dual aspect and open, informal circulation.

This space can be a journey and a destination, an entranceway and a cosy corner. It is light and open but closed off enough to feel like a part of the building. The materials are soft and warm in colour and texture, and the planting becomes a living wall separating the space from surrounding buildings, while breathing fresh air into the area.
Accessibility / Use
The bar / restaurant has enough space to host a range of activities, including bar sports, live sport, live music and entertainment and more - supporting existing uses and giving opportunities for new ones in the future.
