Project Description

Connecting the town and people to the landscape through cycling

The project sits just down the slope of Abergavenny Castle, on the edge of the Abergavenny community orchard, and some industrial buildings. A central outdoor space is surrounded by buildings of different purposes. There are harder boundaries made of stone neighbouring the wooded areas, and the neighbouring factory car park. This helps to establish the enclosed space where activity can occur.

Glass facades create a softer, more open relationship between a building and the outside. There is glass facing the central area of the site, and the east and west facades of the cafe. This helps to connect the cafe with the wooded area behind, so that it is not neglected and the cafe sits more comfortable in the natural environment. Inside the workshop, people have the opportunity to learn bike maintenance and can take part in or observe workshops from the upper balcony. The external spaces are used for people to relax and enjoy the views, and also for events to take place, due to the large spaces, and proximity to the town centre and large flood

The Abergavenny Festival of Cycling takes place each year in the town. There is potential to take part in this event, or continue public interest in cycling throughout the year. Bike events could regularly take place at Skirrid Bike Centre, as well as other sporting events.
