Architectural Design

The Walled city: The walled city is the cultural centre of both Punjab and Pakistan. HEERA MANDI: Heera Mandi, sometimes referred to as Shahi Mohallah ("Royal Neighbourhood"), is a neighbourhood and bazaar located in the Walled City of Lahore. It is located near the Taxali Gate, and south of the Badshahi Mosque, close to the Shalimar Garden and Lahore Fort. North of the Bazaar Harkema, there lived the royal residences in the past. The Heera Mandi had historically been the music culture centre of the city since the 15th and 16th centuries Now, it is specifically known as the red light district of Lahore, Pakistan. How to change the sex workers status through music performing for promoting social interaction and transform this prostitution area to a postive area? General proposal: Performers became sex workers when the policies and economy made the music and performing unable to act as a catalyst in the past.

Through the construction of a music performing center to built a new network of intangible and tangible relationship between new social hub, the design focuses on an intervention of action, involving stakeolders, tourists and, first of all, the sex workers. The space allows sex workers to participate in the society by creating a more flexible social interaction space. Detailed proposal: The design will provide jobs for local sex workers who have the performing experience, also providing education for sex workers who don’t have knowledge about performing, supplying performing space for both the audience and performers. Supply public space for relaxation and communication creating social interaction space. As a music performing center, the center is also supported by policies, a setting office and a reception for administrative purposes. As the culture center, it plays the role of carrying forward music culture, providing an exhibition which in turn, creates a sense of local culture.
