Creates a civic presence within St Pauls, Bristol.
Portfolio Extracts
Currently, many Buddhist centres in Bristol are hidden behind vernacular facades, reflecting the conservative nature of Buddhism in the UK in contrast to their eastern counterparts. Therefore, the project aims to create an identity for Zen Buddhist monks in the UK with a hidden monument that establishes a civic presence in St Pauls, Bristol. The architectural language of the building draws references from monumental buildings and Bristol’s Victorian and Georgian architecture. The contradiction between Zen Buddhism and monumentality poses a challenge for the project to strike a balance between the two while respecting the context of such sensitive site.
