Tidy House
Appropriately for the Alternative Arrangements unit, my project is about picking Clones apart and putting the elements back together in a new way in an effort to appreciate things for what they are.
Tidy House is the Head Quarters of Tidy Towns, the competition preoccupied with finding the tidiest town in the Republic of Ireland. Seen by many as a superficial initiative, Tidy Towns is far from being unimportant.
With a number of participants of almost 1000 in 2019, the competition has an immense reach into the rural communities of Ireland, revealing a massive potential for people’s involvement into the improvement of their surroundings. Tidy House comes as a critique to the competition’s approach today and a call for further exploitation of its potential.
The challenge of my project turned out to be finding the balance in bringing together all the different aspects of Clones and creating a shocking, playful, yet well tied together proposal. The answer came into the usage of a multitude of layers which build up into a harmonious collaboration between the old and the new, the decorative and the useful, the conventional and the alternative. The existing façade is, therefore, wrapped around by contrasting elements which come together to create the monument.
