The aim of this module is to introduce the students to the understanding and application of building performance criteria into the architectural design process. It extends the available design tools and processes towards the relevant performance simulation methods for the evaluation of buildings and their application. Students explore how to combine building performance simulations with optimisation strategies, and how to integrate performance criteria as design drivers. In addition to the theoretical understanding of the performance, simulation and optimisation methods students experiment with the application of the respective methods to individual design tasks.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Identify relevant building performance criteria as design drivers and implement those into a computational design process.
  • Systematically evaluate and apply different computational optimisation methods in an architectural design processes
  • Systematically evaluate and apply different building performance simulation methods in an architectural design process.
  • Present computational processes and their outcome effectively.
