The aim of this module is to introduce students to a range of basic skills connected with identifying and critically evaluating literature and research methods, collecting initial data, planning the research process. In addition, this module entails transferable process skills including communicating about research, networking to build contacts with other researchers and research users, disseminating research by developing a convincing argument in written and oral accounts, and taking responsibility for researchers’ own continuing professional development. The research skills profile that is acquired underpins disciplinary and methodological learning within the Dissertation module.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Define subject, scope and focus, aims, objectives and research question(s) for an individual research project.
- Search for appropriate sources to identify relevant literature.
- Compile a short, critical, well-structured literature review.
- Make appropriate use of recognised academic writing conventions, with particular regard to referencing and bibliographies.
- Make and Verbally present and defend a proposal for research and outline key elements of a proposed methodology.
