Clones Cinema Club
Clones is a small town, located in West County Monaghan, Ireland. The Irish partition in the 1920’s significantly impacted the town as it lost most of its natural hinterland, and this has resulted in a persistent economic deprivation.
The focus of my research was the high street and what it used to look like when it was still thriving in the 1970s through a collection of memories and stories from people who used to live there. The project unfolds in two ways – both as a master plan, which aims to regenerate the street by introducing live/work accommodation and places for work and strategic interventions, which create a new cultural and entertainment centre.
The proposal includes a Cinema Club, which is situated on the site of a previously demolished cinema and Film Workshops for local movie enthusiasts. The buildings borrow elements from both the memories of the old cinema and archival photos and start to reconstruct the architectural language into a cohesive new Alternative Arrangement.
