Multistage Performance Space and Set Design Workshops
Location: Dalby Road, Cliftonville, Margate, UK
Client: Wider community of Cliftonville with a specific focus on the immigrants’ community.
Proposal: The project proposes an open two-type program: one educational (theatre-related workshops – ground floor) and one recreational (multi-stage theatre – to be found it the tower) where the work developed by the immigrant community in the workshops can be displayed/used.
Justification: With Easter Europeans migrating to the UK in search for a less corrupted system and a better quality lifespan, Margate is currently the home of 200 European immigrants.
I am proposing an educational facility, similar to a Vocational school, will bring together artists (from Resort Studio – building at the rear) and theatre employees ( from Royal Margate Theatre, Tom Thumb Theatre) to offer workshops to people. The “teachers” will help the client develop skills such as: furniture making, sewing, and metal works that will, later on, feed into the public face of the program (the theaters and galleries). While through the workshops the apprentices develop communication and craft skills, through the display area and the theatre spaces they become respected in the eyes of the viewers and start learning about the British culture. By having art and craftsmanship to vouch for their work, suddenly they are not prone to prejudice. By gaining the skills needed, it helps them find a secure workplace and hence a secure housing location.
Moreover, not only will it represent an opportunity for the immigrants to grow, but also for the community as a whole. With the hope that community and projects can enhance people’s lives, this scheme relies on good design and willingness from both parties (the immigrants and the already existing British community) to come together.
