Course: Studio 1: a gallery for craft/making
The contemporary gallery design project focuses on the crafts and making program. By exploring and understanding inspirations and techniques of the specific Welsh craftsman’s and artists the design was to establish the sequence of internal, external, and “in between” spaces to frame the collection of craft and making exhibits and activities. The spaces aim to help with the interaction of people, crafts, and making and the specifics of the place.
The site is located in historic Llandaff, adjacent to High Street and Bishops Palace, currently used as a pay and display car park. Given how well connected Llandaff is with public transport, pedestrian and cycle routes, and the car parks prime location within the historic core of the village, the site develops a much more meaningful use. The specific qualities and unique character of the site and context given the consideration to preserve and enhance the life of the surrounding communities.
