Course: Unit 05 Liveable Urbanism
50% of the world’s population lives in cities that only occupy less than 3% of the landmass but consume more than 70% of its resources. Therefore, some argue that cities are the most sustainable solution for human settlement, while others disagree due to patterns of consumption, pollutions, unliveable conditions, suburban expansions, the social, cultural, economic and environmental disparities. Much of research on urban sustainability is often limited to carbon emissions and economics (Jenks and Jones
2010), cities such as Copenhagen which regard as a model for sustainable cities (Siemans, 2015) are not fully addressing the societal, affordability or liveability challenges.
The unit will approach cities as a complex dynamic system and will complete a comprehensive analysis of Kochi about its social, economic, environmental, governance
and spatial subsystems as well as how those systems interact with each other. Through an extensive literature review on the liveable and sustainable city, you will develop
a critical position on what will make cities liveable.
