Project Description

The thesis provokes thoughts about the existing urban environment by selectively demolishing parts of the city to bring the natural environment into the city.

Studying the relationship between sunlight and the water, this project looks at bringing specific moments and lighting phenomena to the fore, allowing people to greater connect with their local environment in a more intimate and immersive manner. Presently the river Taff is completely disconnected from life around this area other than observation from a road bridge and an inconspicuous gate with steps down to a derelict mooring dock. The elements that form a reflection or plays of light in and around the river are examined and deconstructed to create atmospheres that provoke greater understanding of the world around us. This project looks intensely at the framing of sunlight both in direct observation and reflection. The architecture harks back to a primitive association of architecture with its context as both the sun and the world around it.
