Studio 5: School of sustainable food and farming
For the past academic year, studio five engaged with the town of Caerphilly. Historically dominated by the medieval castle at its centre, the studio explored ways that the town might transform in the future. The semester one project sought to deliver different types of housing across three connected sites in the town, combining new homes with new public spaces.
During semester two, focus shifted to the edge of the town and the concept of Sitopia (from the Greek sitos, meaning food and topos, meaning place). Proposals were asked to reconnect Caerphilly with its food culture, landscape, and agricultural heritage by considering the growth and production of food, how it is sold, and how food is eaten.
