Project Description
Fashion Gallery and Studios
This proposal aims to strengthen the creative community based in the center of Spike Island by becoming an epicenter for fashion and making, unifying the many initiatives within this field. I designed the building to be an innovative platform for the fashion world, where makers and artists could establish connections, allowing for a more transparent workflow. Where historically, these sectors were separated and isolated, this design places a strong emphasis on collaboration and demonstration. The aspiration for the project is to provide a place in which a strong sense of curiosity, creativity, and adventure can continue to live and thrive, providing artists with
The centre of Spike Island houses many creative spaces, however it is underutilized and disconnected. I am interested in looking at how I can strengthen the connection between the eastern and western ends of the Island through the revitalization of a public square. Moreover, I am looking to strengthen the creative community based in the centre of Spike Island through a proposal that houses fashion workshops and galleries with a considerable public interest.
My initial studies of Spike Island looked at sites of public activity and how people move about them. On an urban scale this helped me understand the opportunities and constraints of the Island as well as determining the ideal location to house the proposal. After that, I determined the spatial requirements of required spaces and worked on their connections with one another as well as to the adjacent square.
Three main components are characterized in this proposal, when combined they come together to create a place of collaboration, making and demonstrating. A stronger connection between the two main footpaths on Spike Island is created through the proposals' public interest, creating a more vibrant and dynamic environment, unifying the many initiatives found in the center of the Island and Spike Island as a whole.
