Project Description
A street of play that subtly removes the restrictive pressure of performance
Based on research, a good city provides space for both positive and negative discourse and the backdrop for protest. Along with research of the area, Bristol’s rich history of trade and culture of expression; my precedent, David Brownlow Theatre, and my protest game, formed the brief for the elements of this project. The game began my thought process of creating a street for the public to occupy and use rather than simply to transit through. The fabric of the built environment directs movement through streets, and the interaction of people with the urban landscape is fundamental.
The island currently has no theatres. Through multiple visits I realised all ages play within this site, so I decided to define a theatre space that subtly removes the restrictive pressure of performance and a stage for progressive and activist performance. This created a conventional theatre sitting alongside a rehearsal space that can open up to become a backstage for more unconventional theatre on the street.
With the themes of history, expression and involvement running throughout the project, I determined that the new building should sit on the water’s edge, with exposure to views from all angles. Whilst taking into consideration its context, varying levels and structures announce the buildings. The structures are simple so the public have a chance to get involved, continuing the theme, of involvement.
The scheme is both sustainable and includes the retrofit of existing building to provide practical community spaces that would enhance the success of the site.
