Project Description
The introduction of production hub in the characterful Irish town of Carlingford
This project is the proposal of a film studio in the centre of Carlingford, a characterful Irish town located in North-East Ireland. Carlingford is famed for its appearance in the Shipping Forecast , romantic picturesque landscapes and medieval remains. Instead of constructing a functional ‘shed’ on the outskirts, like many production houses, this project’s location utilises the appeal of the town and its surroundings to attract the talent necessary to offer world class film production and the training of a new generation with the required skills.
When developing this project I became aware of the disparate architecture in Carlingford, that had been constructed over the various historic eras. Each piece had its own wealth of stories that they were ready to tell. This led me to view the whole of Carlingford as a film set and my proposal as the ‘narrator’ and thus facilitator for the many buildings or ‘characters’ of the town.
The exterior discloses little detail on the façade. It sits behind the retained frontage of three derelict buildings at the bottom of a bright characterful main street. The delicate black exterior allows it to take a back seat to the theatrics playing out. However, the inside is intended to emphasise the energy of the users and to allow the public realm to crossover its boundary. This has been done, in part by continuing the pavements pattern and texture over the threshold, weaving the energy of the neighbouring pub into the design and integrating thick walls with openings that echo those on the nearby street façades, intending to
turn the studio into a paired street scene that is interconnect
with Carlingford own set.
In designing this studio I have sought to use the attraction of a scenic and historic location to create a proposal that brings together the elements of a film production facility, an Irish Pub and a picturesque Town. I believe the energy of these three elements can be combined to create interest and visibility in this facility and a social, public and professional environment in which to work. Most importantly for the people of Carlingford it will create a facility that can be used to support the film Industry and provide training and employment in a growth area of the
