Project Description
Museum of Repressed & Involuntary Memory
The chosen site is the most prominent monument in Vienna, the Karlskirche in the Karlsplatz. Many historical layers are buried beneath the Karlskirche and to be explored. Karlskirche have different functions overtime which are independent of its form and it shaped Vienna. This propelling monumentbecame the skeleton of the city which dialectically related to city’s growth and its characteristic
This thesis contemplates the ideas of monument, repressed memory and dream by interpreting Otto Wagner’s architectural career and Freud’s theory of memory in the city of dream, Vienna. Starting research of Viennese history, art, and culture. Vienna’s monuments are studied in the framework of Aldo Rossi’s notion of monument from The Architecture of the City. Monument is the primary elements and permanence in the city which are persistent and characteristic urbanartefact. It is an artwork contributed to the morphological and cultural evolution of the city.
The thesis aims to research Wagner’s architectural style,
unbuilt projects, and writings under the psychoanalytic framework of Freud’s repressed memory theory. Repression is a defence mechanism in which people push difficult or unacceptable thoughts out of consciousness. He believed that people repressed memories that were too difficult to confront and expelled them from conscious thought.
The Wagner’s gallery is an addition to the existing Wien Museum and Karlskirche to and recall the repressed memories and monumentalise Otto Wagner’s unfulfilled dream by setting new stage for the Karlsplatz. It combined 2 different architectures and form one coherent but eclectic monument in the Karlsplatz to tell the history of Vienna for the future generations.
