Project Description

A Force of Attraction within the Urban Realm

The brief for this project required the design of an outdoor stage which would act to enhance the abandoned Mount Stuart Graving Docks in Cardiff Bay, hosting a myriad of performances for the public. When visiting the proposed site, the docks seemed a secluded and detached part of the Bay. The isolated nature of the docks comes down to the juxtaposition it creates with the more developed areas and buildings around and within the bay. It was, therefore, important my design would help to improve the atmosphere the Docks create within it’s immediate environment.

Particularly inspired by ‘State set at Greek Theatre’, by OMA, I chose to incorporate a traverse staging type within my design, positioning audience members on either side of the stage platform. Performers would enter from an opening within the raised audience seating. The retractable function within the timber-framed audience seating allows for it to be transported off-site whilst not in use.

Alongside the retractable seating, the stage platform and canopy (with the steel truss girders and columns which support it) can be moved. This would leave behind the permanent structure. Orientation allows for necessary shading over performance area, in order for lighting fixtures to become effective at highlighting performers. Canopy helps to draw audience’s focus towards stage and performers.

Feature inspired by Amphitheatre of Floriade. When the stage platform, along with canopy and retractable seating have been transported off site, the permanent structure remains. During these times, when there is no performance, the meeting room is transformed into a cafe area for the general public, and the balcony offers views out from the bay.
