Project Description

Goodwick Harbour

The proposal located near Goodwick Harbour in Pembrokeshire includes the development of a restaurant and the extension and conversion of a currently disused building into a heritage centre. The project aims to rejuvenate the area and capture the identity and history of Goodwick.

The buildings imitate the original architecture of Goodwick Harbour that was initially constructed in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, many of the original harbour structures have been replaced by modern buildings and so the proposal intends to exhibit this lost history. The site is also located next to Goodwick beach, the place where the last invasion of Britain occurred in 1797. A 30m long tapestry was created by 70 volunteers in 1993 in honour of the event.

The heritage centre extension would house this incredible artwork, located only meters away from the beaches that the French landed on in the 18th century. Goodwick restaurant represents the materiality of the harbour, using corrugated steel cladding to create an industrial front, while a contrasting pine interior creates a warm and welcoming space. As people approach the structure, large amounts of glazing produce a framed view that hints at the scenic beach beyond, creating a unique moment as you enter the building. The exposed vaulted ceiling inside makes for an open and spacious room with panoramic views of the harbour and Goodwick beach. The heritage centre will act as an industrial park and lookout as well as exhibit history about the harbour and the last invasion of Britain. Gabion cages filled with rocks at the back of the building will provide the foundation for a floor to roof earth ramp, providing a panoramic view of the harbour and the beach where the battle of Fishguard and Goodwick began and ended.

After climbing the steps to the top, you can let the slide take you back down to the industrial playground. This area will act as an exploratory park, composed of items that are linked to Goodwick’s identity.
