Project Description

Leisure Resort Treherbert

The Resort situated at the top of the Rhondda Valley, north of Treherbert, sits atop of the Rhondda Train Tunnel, the longest foot tunnel in Europe. This allows the building to connect up and effect a wider area and mutually benefit the tunnel as well, providing different activities and accommodation to the visitors to the site. The site itself is self sufficient with it's own energy, water and waste systems allows it to run independently from the town.

At the heart of the project is the Leisure resort which is a combination of a public leisure centre and a private hotel. Due to this the building's floor are split up into different functions with the public leisure centre being at the bottom having the most access to it with the more private hotel rooms at the top to allow for better view to the surrounding nature. In between these floor is an experience floor that allows for different experiences from a spa to a restaurant.

All the while all these floor frame the view of the valley it site's in through different elements, and shapes of the building. The main materiality of the building comes from the Rhondda tunnel with railway sleepers being the main external timber used and internal timber acoustic panelling being the internal one, while sintered stone helps to contrast this and highlight different functions and elements of the building.

Planned for the future are two additional phases to the project one adding more accommodation in the form of camping and lodges while the other phases focuses on more activities and experiences such as archery and paragliding.
