Project Description

Embassy and Art Centre for Uruguay

The project proposes a new, multifunctional Embassy for Uruguay in Rome, Italy. The goal was to create a prominent and representative diplomatic space that reflects Uruguay's cultural heritage and promotes sustainable practices. The chosen site for the embassy is Campo de' Fiori, a bustling area in the historic city center of Rome.

The design concept focuses on completing the urban fabric of Campo de' Fiori by filling an existing gap in the eastern elevation. The embassy will feature a blend of modern and traditional architectural elements, incorporating materials such as glulam ceilings, lime plaster, hempcrete, rammed earth, and recycled terrazzo to harmonize with the historic character of Rome.

The embassy will comprise several floors and spaces, including a welcoming ground floor with an open facade that connects with the vibrant market square. The public program includes Uruguayan Cafe and Art and Culture Centre located in the Refurbished Cinema Farnese. Courtyard located in the centre of the building connects public and private functions, the latter including conference rooms, open plan and private offices, ancillary spaces, and loggias on upper floors. Sustainability is a key consideration in the project, aligning with Uruguay's commitment to green transformation. The design incorporates energy-efficient systems, renewable materials, and sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact. The new embassy aims to provide a "home away from home" for Uruguayans, while also serving as a platform for cultural, political, and diplomatic exchanges between Uruguay, Italy, and Europe. It will symbolize the strengthened diplomatic relations between Uruguay and Italy, reflecting a new chapter in their long-standing partnership.

Overall, the project focuses on creating an architecturally significant embassy that represents Uruguay's identity, enhances its presence in Rome, and fosters diplomatic relationships in a sustainable and inviting manner.
