Project Description

"The Circle Is SymBolic Of The Heaven And The Square The Earth."

My design revolves around the design of an embassy in Rome, Italy. Taking inspiration from Palazzi and Villa architecture, my aim to create a design that integrates the context of Rome and its piazzas. The embassy will serve as a place where different country ambassadors, Rome citizens, Chinese presidents, and the Chinese ambassador's team can work and engage in diplomatic activities, promoting cultural exchange and collaboration. With a focus on blending the cultures of Italy and China, I recognize the historical connections between the two countries in trade, culture, and art.

To understand the significance of the embassy, I conducted case studies on various diplomatic buildings. Examples include the British Embassy in Rome, which combines contemporary and classical architectural elements, and the Chinese Embassy in the United States, which incorporates traditional Chinese cultural elements alongside modern architectural style. Choosing a location near the Foro Italico allows to connect the embassy with Rome's historical context while symbolizing the bridging of nations and cultures. Consideration is given to the surrounding buildings, such as the 21st-century art museum, Stadio Flaminio, and the EUR district, ensuring visual coherence and harmonious integration with the urban fabric.

Throughout the design process, I prioritize entrance visibility, accessibility, and creating an inviting atmosphere while maintaining security measures. The site's elevation and the underused plaza to the south offer opportunities to revitalize the space and enhance its potential. Incorporating elements from the concept of "Round sky and square earth," I aim to create a space that represents harmony, infinity, and the connection between the spiritual and material realms. Precedents like the Pantheon and Qing dynasty architecture provide inspiration for the design, with concepts such as lighting symbolism and double-volume spaces being explored. My design includes public spaces within the embassy grounds to foster engagement with the local community. Transparency, both in the physical layout and diplomatic activities, is emphasized through features like glass facades, open courtyards, and visible meeting spaces.

The master plan considers traffic flow and security, allowing for the closure of roads when necessary. Vegetation is used as a buffer between the road and the building, promoting permeability and cultural connection. Axonometric views offer a clear understanding of the inside garden, special sky lights, and the overall design of the building, including the use of a green roof.
