Project Description
Archiving Home
We were asked to create a residential project in Cardiff City Centre, the sites we chose from are all currently carparks. I chose the open air carpark on Churchill Way, I liked the idea of starting from scratch in a area that is currently in the middle of a regeneration program.
I wanted to create a low rise, historically informed scheme that provides a precedent for future developments in this part of Cardiff.
Taking inspiration from historic aerial photos and maps, I create a layout that resembled what used to be on the site, terraces and workers cottages. I enjoy the traditional use of corner buildings, and how there is usually some architectural variation even in the most mundane of contexts. It was important that the design had a familiar feel but was not a pastiche on Victorian or Georgian architecture.
There is a mix of building sizes and uses, creating a concentrated diverse urban landscape. Mixing public and residential buildings create active streets and create communities.
