Project Description

Archiving Home

The current project focuses on housing architecture in Cardiff, the capital of Wales. Cardiff presents various housing issues, including a shortage of affordable housing, high levels of homelessness, and a lack of social housing. In response, designed a building with a ground floor and five residential floors, featuring 15 flats per floor, ranging from one to three bedrooms to cater to all clients.

To maximize sunlight, most residential units face south. I incorporated larger windows to let in natural light, and the windowsill, inspired by my emotional space, serves as a seat rather than just a window. The layout divides living and sleeping spaces into two blocks, with double or triple access to balconies from both the bedrooms and living rooms. Additionally, the bathroom has dual entryways from the bedroom and living area for improved circulation.

The ground floor of the building is designed as a public space rather than solely for residents. Given the growing population of students in Cardiff, transformed the area into study and office spaces. Creating these areas benefits both the residents and the larger community. The design includes green roofs and hanging plants to increase vegetation on the site and restore Churchill Way to its former state which also increases the biodiversity on the site. These additions not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to a more sustainable project. While my proposal currently obstructs an office, implemented open hallways, courtyards, and greenery to create a sense of connection between residents and office workers, ensuring they are not completely isolated from the community or blocked off from the building.

By addressing Cardiff's housing challenges and incorporating elements of sustainability and community engagement, the project aims to provide homes that meet the basic needs of residents while contributing to the wider well-being of the city. Through careful design decisions, hope to make a positive impact on the housing landscape in Cardiff, creating spaces that are functional, affordable, and conducive to community well-being.
