Project Description

A Stage for Words

This design is intended to provide a space for the speaking elements of the Eisteddfod Festival, which celebrates Welsh Culture. Placed at the end of one of Cardiff Bays’ old docks, the spectator area looks through the structure, leaving the rest of the historic bay to act as a backdrop for the performances.

The vista created with the backdrop allows the stage to create a strong link with the bay as a whole, as key features such as the Norwegian church can be highlighted through the backdrop. The stage is at the core of the building, with two wings supporting from the side. One wing features important facilities to aid the function of the space, whilst the other wing provides space for a lounge and social area.

Created as a performing venue, the pavilion is intended to be used after festival in a similar manner. The pavilion will be used to host events and rehearsals, such as those put on by the Hijinx Theatre Company, who help provide opportunities in the acting world to those with disabilities, who otherwise may not get the same chances as everyone else. The structure of the pavilion uses locally sourced materials to create an environmentally conscious space. Other factors such as the second use of materials, if the pavilion is to be taken down, were considered when designing the structure.

The chosen site location also aims to maximise the convenience and benefits associated with public transport. With Cardiff City Council’s plans to create a stronger link between the city centre and the bay, with the implementation of a tram system, the site location will become more accessible over time.
