Project Description
Culinary Kiosk
The brief for the project was to design a culinary kiosk located in Cardiff Bay near the historic Pierhead building. The kiosk design was required to enable the preparation, sale and consumption of Cawl, a local Welsh dish, as well as provide a new space for cultural exchange within the city
I simplified the brief into three main intentions which I aimed to fulfil within the design; providing concessions of the food ‘Cawl’, promoting sustainability, and encouraging the revival of Welsh culture. Upon visiting the site and Cardiff Bay local area, I found that the area was colorful and lively, with various graffiti prevalent throughout.
Following my precedent analysis I began to produce initial sketches, breaking my design down into basic shapes and geometry. I was particularly inspired by the shadows found at the site and the asymmetrical forms of the graffiti. I particularly wanted to include the ‘Cawl’ lettering to advertise the business. The final kiosk design combined both geometric, graffiti inspired ideas with sustainability. The circular design shields the users from harsh winds and sunlight, whilst allowing views out across the bay. The slatted beams cover areas across the second floor, sheltering without impeding functionality or sightlines.
The final design centered on the dynamic circulation of customers and users, encouraging conversation and learning, with the rooms linking together in a fluid motion. Views are available both into the surrounding landscape of Cardiff Bay, as well as introspectively, through the placement of balconies and slatted beams, allowing the consumer to feel connected to the urban area.
