Project Description

A facility to house industries that surround the manufacturing, processing and consumption of food.

My year began with a question. How can a small architectural intervention stimulate new industry in the heart of an industrial market town?

From this I was able to establish a set of themes that would create the focus of my thesis project. This centred principally on industrial processes around food production, from production, manufacturing, processing and consuming. My initial proposal for an industrial space in stroud was for a micro distillery. This emerged as a suitable industrial process due to the landforms and assets in around Stroud and more importantly the ways in which they are connected.

From this I began to research more extensively the agricultural characteristics of Stroud as well as the potential for new interventions into the public infrastructure such as transport networks that would facilitate a new industrial facility in the centre of Stroud. This process began with the curation of a carefully considered design brief that considers the topics of interest that I established in my primer project as well as the unit brief requirements. I then researched in detail how the scheme would work looking into the processes and industries that would take place in my scheme.
In addition, I established a set of design typologies and principles from which I would design to create a scheme that was suitable and successful in this context. These design principles include creating a scheme that: exposes and celebrates industry, creates a new lifer for the Stroudwater Canal and create a new and shared asset for the community. From this I resolved a scheme that hosts a range of industrial and social industries including facilities for vertical farming, professional food production, lab-based manufacturing of meat products, traditional crop growing and several other industries. In addition, I made moves to improve the public realm of my focus area and create a scheme that is not only a highly productive facility but also an asset of the

The scheme is split into 3 distinct sections all of which have a specific atmospheric quality based on the contents of each space as well as specific goals I had for each part of the scheme.
