Project Description

Urban Oasis

Aim of the project was to design a building which is within a city that evolves, enabling the building to withstand years and adapt multiple uses over time, contributing to sustainability and the Cardiff city. Enabling the relationship between specifity and indeterminacy to produce beautiful urban architecture.

The project is a reflection of analysing Cardiff where spaces next to the Central Trainstation lack green spaces that are beneficial in everyday lives due to their ability to reduce Co2 emissions, absorb noise, produce natural shading and absorb excess water.

Due to careful consideration a thesis has been developed which focuses on 'integrating a green urban space for congregation and community development', in order to create the interaction between people and nature.

The project mainly focused on integrating greenery into the building through Biophilic design, which contributes to the wellbeing of people; the main idea formed by analysing the site in more detail, through examination of Calleghan Square, and how it is mainly used as a passage way rather than a relaxing space, therefore pedestrianising the site was also a priority within the project, to enable people to have easier access routes, but also create this interaction with nature though the integration of open green seating spaces.
