Project Description
Intense & Serene
The project is situated within a new masterplan set to be developed in Cardiff in the coming years. This mixed use development will consist of numerous high-rise buildings and will increase the density of the area significantly.
Green and recreational spaces, however, are scarce. Thus, the project aims to create a balance between the high-density environment and the provision of open recreational spaces. To address this, two open spaces are being shaped. The first is integrated within the intensity of the surrounding area, situated next to several bus stops.
The second space is enclosed yet open to the public, offering a tranquil atmosphere. These spaces could serve as a "quick escape" from the typical 9-to-5 office environment but also provide a place for children to play. The building does not have a fixed use – it can accommodate any programme and be adapted in the future. In order to refine its framework, three scenarios were tested in it – residential flats, offices and a hotel.
These could also occur in different parts of the building at the same time. As the external appearance of the building could not be determined by its programme, it was purely determined by the way the facades were perceived in urban terms. Consequently, the building's appearance became intentionally ambiguous, – one could not tell if it looked more residential or commercial.
